Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the format of your monthly
meetings?
A: Our standard monthly meeting format includes presentation of the
equipment on demonstration, including some tracks selected to
demonstrate different aspects of the sound. One hour of the meeting
is dedicated to member's music, with the chance to share some of the
music that members enjoy. There is also an extended afternoon tea,
to allow plenty of time to socialise. The meetings run for three
hours in total.
Q: What kind of music do you play at
your monthly meetings?
A: The range of musical styles is very broad, as our members have
interests in rock, pop, electronic music, classical (solo, vocal,
ensemble, orchestral, opera), jazz, blues, world music, folk,
country etc. The format of the meeting ensures that a range of
genres is always represented.
Q: What is a SIG?
A: SIG stands for Special Interest Group. As the name implies, SIG's
comprise people with a shared interest in particular musical styles
or equipment types. For example, we have a SIG focussed on rock, pop
and electronic music, another focussed on
classical music and another on Jazz. We are always interested in expanding our SIG's to
include other shared interests.
Q: Do I have to have an expensive Hi Fi
System to join the Club?
A: Not at all. Many of our members have modest systems, some of them
built by the members themselves. Many members have an interest in
cost effective sound systems.
Q: What kind of equipment do you use at
your monthly meetings?
A: That depends on who is providing the equipment. Sometimes, the
system is supplied by a retailer, other times one or more members
bring along their equipment (both commercial and DIY). We have had a
wide range of commercially available equipment used at meetings, including Linn, Quad,
Boulder, Rega, Metronome, Kharma, Luxman, Pioneer, Audio Research,
Linear Design, Meridian, ME, B&W, Banff, Orelle, AC Magnum etc etc.
Q: Can I come to meetings without
joining?
A: Non members can attend up to two meetings without formally
joining the Club. After this, we ask you to formalise your
membership by filling out the application form.
Q: How do I join?
Q: How much does it cost to join the
Sydney Audio Club?
A: Standard Membership fee is $55 per annum, $60 in the first year. In some cases, discounts apply,
and the new member fee is pro-rated if you join in the middle of the
membership year.
